Open Letter to Federation President

Open Letter to Şahin KÖMÜRCÜ, President of the Turkish Rugby Federation

Dear Mr. President,

I would like to start by introducing myself and stating the reasons why I am writing to you. My name is Yannick HEBERT, and I am 34 years old French citizen married to a Turkish citizen and currently living in Istanbul. I played Rugby in France from the age of 10, and as I moved to Istanbul in October 2009, I joined the Ottomans Rugby team.

You learned and probably saw on national television, newspapers, and on the internet that the game of Sunday 01/02/2010 between Samsun and Istanbul Ottomans was stopped due to the invasion of the field and subsequent violent acts by a substitute player of the Samsun team.

Following this incident which unduly ended the game and the extensive media coverage, I have decided to write you this open letter as the victim of the above mentioned incident and also relay it to all Turkish Rugby clubs and the media who covered the event.

As a result of this incident, I had to stay in the Samsun Hospital for intensive eye care for 3 days and got 4 stitches above my eyebrow. I am still on heavy eye treatment and will have to be monitored for my eye condition and eventual post traumatic problems in the following days.

I have obviously lodged complain to the local police and hired a lawyer to follow the case. I am naturally expecting a strong reaction from the Federation towards that player, and hope that this incident will lead to regulations that will be “case law” to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.

As you are probably aware, it is not the first time that major violence occurs during a rugby game in Samsun. But I don’t believe the Samsun club should be punished too severely for this new incident. There are people in the Samsun club with good intentions, who are actively participating in the development of Turkish Rugby. Banning them from the league would not be the solution.

We lack well trained and experienced referees, who are the people to control the field and ensure a safe practice of Rugby during game. Also as most of the players are new and do not know the rules well, coaches should have all the necessary tools to teach rugby by the book to the largest group, both kids and adults. The incident of last Sunday could probably have been prevented with a better knowledge of the rules and spirit of Rugby. and by a better refereeing .

In my point of view, the solution would be to join the IRB.
By joining the IRB, we would obtain professional refereeing and coaching trainings (and plenty of other advantages), and supply the Turkish clubs with all the necessary material they are presently missing. However, as you know, Mr. President, the first step would be to establish a dedicated Rugby federation.
In the last decade, countries like Greece, Georgia, Ukraine, Portugal, Spain, and even countries in Africa have developed their own Rugby Federation and are now competing in official international events. It is a pity that Turkey is not yet represented. It is also sad for the youth of Turkish Rugby to be deprived of the honor to represent their country in such a prestigious international Rugby events

After the unfortunate publicity of last weekend, I believe you have a unique opportunity use the media coverage to show the whole country and the Rugby world indeed, that Turkish Rugby is not limited to such incidents, and that you are determined and dedicated to making Turkey a major nation in the international Rugby scene.

The entire Turkish rugby community is looking to you and relying on your efforts to reverse the negative impact of this incident, Mister President. We all trust your understanding and goodwill to achieve all these necessary changes.

With my sincere respect and sportive friendship,
Yannick HEBERT

Yannick HEBERT

Pumas v Ottomans - Match report

5th December 2009

Despite wet conditions a good crowd turned out to watch a very physical game in true rugby tradition. The Pumas dominated in the first half with fly-half Can Özyüruk scoring all the points with a try, conversion and penalty. The home team went into half time with a 10-0 lead. However the Ottomans fought back and controlled much of the second half, scoring a try which they failed to convert, taking the score to 10-5.

The wet conditions dictated a game that was dominated by the forwards, where the Pumas were far stronger winning much of the lineout and scrum ball. When the Ottomans were able to get the ball out to their backs they showed more fluidity than the home side.

This was the first league game for new coach George Armstrong who was impressed with the player’s positive attitude and commitment.

“The whole team worked for the full 80 minutes,” he said. “Thanks to Kim Tyler for all his fitness work and to Keith Ellor for his input which has helped to get us off to a great start, however, there is still a lot of work to be done if we want to retain our title.”

Man of the match went to Mirunalan Guhanesan, who had an outstanding game after coming on to play in the position of flanker, when Dinçhan Kilercioğlu moved to prop to replace the injured Mohammad Azari.

After the game both teams enjoyed an evening of entertainment at the Pumas new match day clubhouse, 15s bar and restaurant

The Pumas next league game is expected to be early January.

Pumas vs Ottomans & Badirkoy

Match Report – Pumas v Ottomans & Badirkoy 26th April 2008

The weather conditions were foul – a strong breeze blowing diagonally across the pitch carrying a drizzly rain that hung in the air and soaked everything.

The match against the Ottomans began with a bright start from the Pumas. Playing from left to right strong Puma scrum pressure for the first 10 minutes or so kept the Ottomans back on their 22 and long kicks from the Ottoman fly half who had the advantage of the wind was their only means of clearing their lines. Good work in the lineout meant that the Puma’s retained possession and forced the Ottomans back repeatedly.

However the Ottomans started to find their form and after 20 minutes or so the story was reversed. A good lineout steal on the half way line provided the Ottomans with the platform to create quick ball and only strong defence kept the Ottomans at bay. The pressure was intense and poor defensive kicking only served to make the Puma position worse. Only repeated Ottoman mistakes were allowing the Pumas any respite, the referee and linesmen doing well to spot Ottoman hands in the maul as they strove forward. Eventually the damn had to break and a smooth Ottoman backs move sent their winger clear with only the Puma fullback to beat. The attempted tackle was so high seagulls started to look worried. A penalty try was awarded, the full back sin-binned for 10 minutes and a difficult conversion, successfully taken, put the Ottomans 7 points ahead. The Ottomans were now in full flow and the Pumas now down to 14 men were fully stretched in defence. An open side pass after driving down the centre put the Ottoman outside half clean through but in his excitement he ran the ball out over the deadball line before putting down. The resulting 22 drop out from the Pumas was appalling and a Puma infringement in the resulting maul gave the Ottomans an easy 3 points for a 10-nil lead at half time.

The Pumas knew their school boy errors were putting themselves under pressure, they had to retain the ball in the pack and they had to ensure that the Ottoman fly-half was put under pressure.

With the wind behind them for the second half the Puma defensive kicks at last gained distance. However poor retaining of pack possession and some weak back tackling allowed the Ottomans space on the wing and another try was duly despatched and converted. Further errors started to permeate the side and another penalty this time for not releasing gave the Ottomans a 20 -0 lead. An Ottoman break down the left provided another try although the conversion was missed. The Pumas were tiring. A final penalty for going over the top on the Puma try line gave the Ottomans a 28-0 lead. Tempers had started to get a little frayed – the Ottoman attempts to dominate the match and the refusal of the Pumas to submit resulted in various incidents on the pitch in the last 10 minutes or so and a yellow card for Dinchan Kilercioglu didn’t help the cause. However Pumasa hung on and the Ottomans failed to score again. Throughout all of this game Sam Butcher had been outstanding – leading from the front and trying to take the ball to the Ottomans, one of the first in defence to make the tackle and all the time putting his body on the line for the team. He was deservedly awarded the man of the match by both sides.

Twenty minutes later the Pumas had to do it all again as Badirkoy had arrived at the ground. The conditions hadn’t improved, the Ottoman game had been extremely tough and the team was tired. Badirkoy are not a strong team. A fit Puma side would probably have run up four or five tries against them. Batuhan Oksuzal opened the scoring with a try wide left after a strong break from Mohammed Azari and Dinchan Kilercioglu almost converted from the touch line striking the cross bar. 5-0.

Badirkoy were a strong physical side who wanted to give a good account of themselves. They made life hard for the Puma forwards who were exhausted from the previous match. Eventually the effort started to tell and the substitution of Dinchan in the second half meant the scrums went uncontested.

Further substitutions were to follow as slowly the effort of the previous game took its toll. Special mention must go to Steve Knight who stepped up to the plate on the wing and has probably played himself into the first team through a bravura performance. He never missed a tackle and in the second half seemed to be everywhere on the pitch plugging the defensive gaps.

A second Puma try by Johnatan Nicholas after Halit Ozcan did everything except put the ball down and a successful conversion gave the very tired Pumas a 12-0 lead. The circumstances of the try obviously fired up Badirkoy who redoubled their efforts and tired Puma defence conceded 2 tries in the last 10 minutes of the match. The final score was 12-10 to the Pumas.

As a final word the Pumas would like to say a big thank you to the Ottomans for a fine Saturday night which was very entertaining and very much enjoyed by the whole team.

Simon Kiddle
