Pumas v Northampton

Pumas v Northampton Casuals The Pumas suffered their first defeat of the 2009/10 season on Saturday. Northampton Casuals, on tour from the UK, beat the home side 43-19.The game started with the Casuals keeping the game in the forwards and picking and driving the ball up field, it was only due to some great tackling by the Pumas that didn’t score.  The home team took the lead initially when Man of the Match Can Özyürük made a break and kicked ahead, scoring under the posts and then converting the try taking the Pumas to a 7-0 lead. The Casuals made it a very physical game, fielding a very strong pack. Although most of the touring side were veterans, they also had two young back row players, one of whom plays for the Wasps academy side. It wasn’t long before their talent paid off with three tries in quick succession. The Pumas came back with Can setting Hilmi Kocak up for a try, which Dinçhan Kilercioğlu converted. At half time the score stood at 17-14 to the Northampton Casuals. In the second half the Pumas once again took the lead with Batuhan Öksüzal chasing down a kick and putting Emre Taşkın in for the score. However the Casuals upped their game scoring a further four tries before the final whistle. The Pumas continue their bid to retain the Turkish Champions title playing their next league game on Saturday (March 13) in Istanbul against the Ottomans.

Cyprus Rugby Union 2009 - 2010 Season

Cyprus Rugby Union 2009 – 2010 - SEASON OBJECTIVES

Following on from the success of last season the Pumas are striving for a massive season this year, the Committee Members have an awful lot of work in front of them but are determined to make this season special and are keen to lay a marker down and set a standard for the years to follow.

We have intentions of organising a proper 10’s tournament hopefully involving a minimum of 5 teams over one or two days, we are working with three UK touring sides who have expressed keen interest in touring North Cyprus this season, we are looking at retaining the Turkish Title we achieved last year and for more fixtures from the Turkish Federation and we also wish to explore the possibilities of organising a TRNC Rugby League.

Our new Acting Chairman will continue to explore possibilities with FIRA and the IRB to hopefully gain their support and recognition of our club

In addition to the playing fixtures we are also looking to develop our sponsorship, which is so vital for us to maintain our position in the Turkish League, but also for the very survival of our precious club, we are continuously looking at fund raising events and how best to offer our supporters a great days entertainment whilst at the same time raising much needed funds.

We will also be giving something back by once again supporting Cancer Awareness, following last years successful “Balls to Cancer” calendar the Club has been asked to support the campaign again which we will do so with 110% commitment.

We are also looking at raising our profile throughout the Island and beyond, through our website, various contacts and affiliations with International Clubs, one of the clubs aims in the future will be to reciprocate visiting teams and tour in their country, how marvellous would it be to have a TRNC based rugby team touring in the UK!!

In terms of Club Management we are hopeful of working with a new Head Coach who has a wealth of experience attained in the UK who can help take us forward from where Malcolm Lighthowler departed, we are hopefully soon to receive our scrum machine which will be a huge training bonus and once again we are lucky to have Brad, Baz, Eddie, Kim and Gary who so kindly give up their time to help train and coach the players throughout their Rugby careers with the Cyprus Pumas.

The club actively seeks new players and we are pleased to be welcoming some new faces for the start of the season, due to our close links with the GAU a lot of our players are students and as such move on, it has always been an issue to keep a steady nucleus of players and it now appears we have that foundation on which to build.

As you will see we are a very active club and there is an enormous amount of work in progress, it is wholly attributable to the support we receive that allows us to grow, if there are supporters out there that would like to get involved and feel they can help us achieve our objectives then we would gratefully receive their help.

We have various committees and a monthly committee meeting where we meet, discuss and report on the previous months activities, if anyone would be interested in joining a committee then please contact the Club Secretary.

Alternatively like most clubs we are always in need of preparation help or help on the day, I,E ( BBQ help, poster distribution for events, transportation of goods on the day, selling tickets, managing the gate ect)  if you feel you could spare any time and expertise in this area please contact the Club Secretary.

The Club would like to thank all of its supporters for help over the last season and will be doing everything we can to bring you regular fixtures and provide a good family atmosphere for all to enjoy.
